Deacons
The biblical office of the deacon is that of a servant. The deacon serves God and ministers to the body of Christ. The Deacon Ministry at Cave Spring Baptist Church is made up of men who are chosen by the church. They are ministry focused. The qualifications of a deacon are set forth in the Scripture: I Timothy 3:8-13 Deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
The Deacon Ministry comes alongside the pastoral staff and is active in serving in the following primary areas:
o Ministry of the Lord’s Supper and Baptism – the Deacons serve in assisting the pastors in both of these New Testament ordinances.
o Care Ministry – making visits to the sick and hospitalized.
o Crisis Ministry – ministering to those who are experiencing various crises in their lives.
o Widows’ Ministry – ministering to those who are widows as qualified in I Tim 5.
o Bereavement Ministry – ministering to those who have suffered loss of loved ones.
o Prayer Ministry – the Deacons meet to pray regularly for needs of the church family both spiritual and physical. They also take the lead in the Stand in the Gap Prayer Ministry, praying specifically during the preaching of God’s Word on Sunday mornings.
